VYAKTIGAT MULYA EVAN LOKTANTRIK CHETNA: SOCIAL MEDIA KE SANDARBH MEIN ADHYAYAN

SHEVANA, DR. SMITA MISHRA

Abstract

Social media constitutes a collective of digital communication channels grounded in internet and web-based technologies, facilitating users in the creation, dissemination, sharing, and mutual exchange of information. These platforms offer individuals and groups opportunities to engage with ideas, experiences, emotions, and socio-political issues, thereby shaping personal values ??and democratic consciousness. Hinton and Hjorth (2013) argue that rather than viewing social media solely through a technology-centric lens, it should be perceived as a phenomenon that not only catalyzes societal change but also actively reflects the transformations occurring within society. This research study employs the content analysis method, situated within a qualitative research methodology. The objective of the present study is to examine the impact of social media on personal values ??and democratic consciousness. Through this approach, an analysis was conducted regarding the content available across various social media platforms, youth engagement, modes of expression, and responses to socio-political issues. The study revealed that social media strengthens democratic consciousness by fostering the rapid dissemination of information, freedom of expression, public participation, and social awareness. However, the study also sheds light on the negative repercussions of social media; specifically, the proliferation of misleading information and "fake news," along with the polarization of opinions, pose serious challenges to democratic consciousness. Consequently, the study concludes that social media acts as a double-edged sword—one that, through responsible usage and digital literacy, can play a pivotal role in the construction of a democratic society. Furthermore, this research offers significant guidance for the development of the digital citizen.
