ROLE AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF ASSAMESE WOMEN IN THE INDIAN NATIONAL FREEDOM MOVEMENT
AGAMONI BHUYAN
Abstract
The history of India’s freedom struggle is often remembered through the contributions of prominent political leaders, but the movement was also shaped by countless ordinary people who participated at the local level. Among them, the women of Assam played an important role. Assamese women organized themselves through local associations, promoted education and social awareness, participated in the Non-Cooperation and Civil Disobedience Movements, and later became an important force during the Quit India Movement of 1942. The formation of the Dibrugarh Mahila Samiti in 1915 marked the beginning of women’s organization in the Brahmaputra Valley of Assam. Gandhiji’s visit to Assam in 1921 gave Assamese women a sense of self-confidence and drew them into national political life through the influence of his personality. Leaders such as Chandraprabha Saikiani and Pushpalata Das demonstrated how women’s social-reform activities could develop into political activism. This article examines the different forms of women’s participation, with particular attention to women’s organizations, political activism, and sacrifice. It also explores how participation in the national movement opened new spaces for Assamese women in public life.
