EXPLORING SOCIOCULTURAL CHALLENGES AND COPING STRATEGIES: WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO GARO YOUTH

Abstract

This study attempts to explore the experiences and challenges faced by Garo youth in Kolkata. The research aims to understand their academic journey, the sociocultural obstacles they face, the resilience they show, and the role of support they receive.The study used a quantitative approach. The sample was collected 25 Garo students residing in Kolkata. The findings suggest a positive educational journey, with a majority of students satisfied with the methods of teaching used in their institutions and also with the staff and the institution itself. Nevertheless, the study reveals the existence of sociocultural challenges which includeslanguage barriers, feelings of isolation, and problems in relating to cultural differences and ethnic discrimination to some. The findings revealed that despite these difficulties, the Garo youth exhibit considerable resilience to overcome challenges and appreciation of the support they receive from the community at Kolkata. The study sums up suggesting practical recommendations for researchers, educationists and policy makers, promoting the need to increase resources, cross-cultural understanding, and attempt to create a more inclusive environment. These findings can help in understandingbetter the woes and needs of the migrant students.
