CONTRIBUTION OF PANDIT ISHWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR AS EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL REFORMER
JUHI SINGH
Abstract
One of the foremost pillars of the Bengal Renaissance, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar played a crucial role in advancing the social reform movements initiated earlier by Raja Rammohan Roy in the early nineteenth century. Vidyasagar made remarkable contributions to the development and standardization of the Bengali language, earning the title “Father of Bengali Prose” (Sen, 2012). His efforts in the field of education were transformative, particularly in promoting inclusive and accessible learning opportunities for all sections of society (Chatterjee, 2015). He was a strong advocate of women’s education and was instrumental in establishing numerous schools for girls in Bengal, thereby challenging prevailing social norms (Mukherjee, 2010). Through his progressive vision and practical initiatives, Vidyasagar significantly influenced the modern education system in India. His legacy continues to inspire contemporary educational reforms and social change (Sarkar, 2018).
