AN ANALYTICAL REVIEW: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND SELF-CONCEPT IN ADOLESCENCE

Abstract

 Adolescence is a transfiguration phase of advancement. It is characterized by an amazing rate of growth and change, second only to infancy, and marks one of the most significant life transformations. Adolescents may question their values and test their patience in their relationships with family and peers, as well as reflect on their own talents and definition of success. Negative self-esteem developed during adolescence is associated with inappropriate behaviour and emotions. So how intelligently a person uses emotions is the prime meaning of emotional intelligence. Generally, adolescents engage in new experiences; unexpected situations; in good or bad feelings, so to improve their Intellectual skills, there is a need to strengthen the ideas that enable them to control their emotions. Emotional intelligence helps individual to develop knowledge of understanding emotions and emotional intelligence gives the understanding of how person manipulates emotions with the goal of elevating emotions and intellectual development. All available training and practice in the field of psychology, researchers show good practices have a positive attitude on young men and women. The principles of Emotional intelligence and knowledge are helping in improving mental intelligence in adolescents and develop positive self-concept. A holistic set of factors, including family, school, media, and adequate social functioning can make a big difference in improvement of adolescent emotional intelligence. The review of related literature indicates that several studies have been conducted on self-concept and emotional intelligence among adolescents. The present paper attempts to review the existing literature on self-concept and emotional intelligence in order to examine their relationship and its applicability for designing effective educational programmes and identifying future research directions. The review is expected to provide a strong foundation for proposing further studies in the areas of self-concept and emotional intelligence.
