PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN MANAGING CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract

Parental involvement is a key predictor of students' academic achievement and holistic development. Aim: To examine the level of parental involvement among Class X students and its relationship with academic achievement, and to compare parental involvement based on gender and school type (BSE and CBSE).Background: Parental involvement plays a significant role in supporting students' learning, curricular activity management, and academic success during secondary education. Study: The study was conducted among 100 Class X students (50 males and 50 females) selected through stratified random sampling from four secondary schools in Bargarh Municipality, Odisha. Methodology: Data were collected using the Parental Involvement Scale (PIS-CA) developed by Vijaya Laxmi Chauhan and Gunjan Ganotra Arora. Academic achievement was assessed through students' summative examination scores. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, and Pearson's product-moment correlation were employed for data analysis. Results: The findings revealed moderate to high parental involvement. Male students reported significantly higher parental involvement than female students, whereas no significant difference was found between BSE and CBSE schools. A significant positive correlation (r = .367, p< .01) was observed between parental involvement and academic achievement. Analysis: The findings indicate that greater parental involvement is associated with improved academic performance regardless of school board affiliation. Conclusion: Active parental involvement contributes positively to students' academic achievement and effective management of curricular activities. Schools should strengthen home-school partnerships and encourage equitable parental involvement to enhance students' educational outcomes.
