NOVEL CORONA VIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19) PANDEMIC: EMERGING CHALLENGES AND IMPACTS ON ENVIRONMENT

Abstract

A new corona virus disease, officially named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO), has caused a global pandemic with profound impacts on many aspects of human life. COVID-19 has contributed to waste generation and different phases of challenges in waste management practices. The pandemic has posed major environmental challenges including municipal solid waste (MSW), hazardous biomedical waste and plastic waste management. There is a potential increase in the generation of municipal solid waste, a potential reduction in selective collection rates and, above all, an increase in medical waste production. During the viral outbreak, many types of additional medical and hazardous waste are generated including infected masks, gloves, syringes, samples, and other protective equipment’s. The increased demand for single-use PPE by doctors and other health care workers and mandated usage of masks for the public has also transformed the dynamics of plastic waste generation.

This study presents specific cases for biomedical waste, plastic waste, and municipal waste management, all of which have been a major cause of concern during this crisis. This study also highlights the challenges and impacts of the solid waste management on environment during the ongoing pandemic. Lastly, recommendations and preliminary considerations on waste management are discussed.
