ABERRATIONS IN PERSONALITY MAKE-UP THROUGH SOCIO- CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES: A CRITICAL REVIEW

DR. MONICA S. SHARMA, DR. S. K. TRIPATHI

Abstract

Children who are exposed to negative experiences like abuse, violence, illness and death of family members, socio- economic stress, impoverishment, etc., tend to develop aberrated personality traits, which become pronounced during adolescence. Factors such as age, gender, family dynamics, parental interactions, environmental stress, academic demands and the adolescents’ perception of the stimuli they are exposed to, affect changes in personality make- up. Literature elucidating these effects has been reviewed in the present study. Research on the effects of counseling practices has also been examined. The paper concludes that there is an urgent and serious need to address many detrimental issues surrounding children and adolescents, especially their family and social environment, so that they may grow up to overcome these threats, to become well- adjusted and healthy adults.
